Environmental Training

Environmental training for staff is important to help with ensuring legal compliance, development and implementation of your Environmental Management System (EMS), and improving your organisation’s environmental performance.

All staff should be appropriately trained in the organisation’s general environmental issues and specific training needs for individuals assigned particular roles should be identified and appropriate training given.

General Environmental Awareness Training
All staff should have an understanding of general environmental issues including:

• Environmental issues within and outside the organisation.
• The organisations significant environmental impacts.
• Measures the organisation is putting in place to manage its environmental impacts, such as implementing a company Environmental Policy and Environmental Management System.
• Measures put in place to ensure legal compliance.
• Actual improvements that have been made, such as recycling of waste, reductions in energy consumption.

Contractors who work on your behalf or on your site should also receive appropriate environmental training.

Detailed Environmental Awareness Training
Specific training will be required for organisations working towards implementation of a formal EMS (Green Dragon, BS 8555, ISO 14001, EMAS), or where staff roles involve managing specific elements of an organisation’s activities which have significant impact on the environment.
This training should include:

• Role/area specific assessment of environmental impacts or aspects.
• If implementing an EMS Standard, a good understanding of the Standard and its requirements and how it relates to their working practices.
• Detailed training on documentation and procedures relating to specific staff work areas.
• Identification of specific environmental legislation affecting the company and specific working practices to ensure compliance.
• Internal audit training to ensure agreed working practices and procedures are followed.
• Information on likely consequences of deviation from agreed procedures.
• Environmental improvement objectives and targets, progress in meeting them, and benefits if they are achieved (environmental, financial and social).
