Unnecessary transport usage by UK businesses is costing them dear. The increasing demand by businesses for the transportation of goods and people is also having an ever greater impact on the environment.

The following facts may encourage you to look closer at transportation within your business:

• The cost of traffic jams to British business is £20 billion every year. 
• Diesel prices have increase significantly passing £1 per litre. All the indications are that this figure is likely to increase further.
• Congestion levels are forecast to grow by between 11 and 20 per cent over the next ten years.

There are a range of measures available to businesses to help them reduce environmental impacts relating to transport and in the process reduce company costs.

Travel Plans

Travel Plans can be produced to help manage an organisations transport related operations and help reduce company costs. The Plan should assess current transport usage, associated costs, and impacts on the environment, staff and the local community. It should identify possible threats and opportunities for improvement, such as increased use of public transport, decreasing company costs, increased levels of walking and cycling, and increased moral amongst staff

> Are vehicles fitted with a vehicle management/navigation system?   
Could you start using recycled biodiesel or a percentage of biodiesel in your vehicles?
> What is the load factor of your vans/lorries and could this be increased?
