The Green Dragon Environmental Standard is stepped approach to implementing a company Environmental Management System (EMS) specifically designed to help small and medium sized businesses manage and improve their environmental performance and gain an appropriate certification.
There are 5 Green Dragon Levels and a certification can be gained at each level. To gain certification at a particular level the organisation must meet the requirements at that level and all previous levels. The 5 Green Dragon Levels are:
Level 1 - Commitment to Environmental Management
Level 2 - Understanding Environmental Responsibilities
Level 3 - Managing Environmental Impacts
Level 4 - Environmental Management Programme
Level 5 - Continual Environmental Improvement
Green Dragon allows the implementation of an EMS appropriate to size and nature of the organisation. Green Dragon can also be used as an implementing tool to achieve ISO 14001, EC Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) or BS 8555. The key elements of the Green Dragon Environmental Standard are:
Planning
Taking action
Checking progress
Reviewing achievements
The five levels of the Green Dragon Environmental Standard incorporate the following core principals:
The organisation must be able to demonstrate continual environmental improvement. If the organization cannot demonstrate continual environmental improvement through actions identified in an Improvement Plan or Objectives and Targets the Green Dragon Environmental Standard may be suspend on recertification.
The organisation must be able to demonstrate that it is legally compliant at the time of the audit with regard to environmental legislation. A summons for prosecution, enforcement notice or abatement notice may lead to the suspension of the Green Dragon certificate.
The Green Dragon Environmental Standard requires that pollution risks are identified and measures put in place to ensure an incident does not occur. If a pollution incident does occur the Green Dragon Administrator must be informed when a decision will be made on whether to suspend the Standard.
A requirement of Green Dragon is that all staff, contractors, suppliers and other interested parties are informed of the organisations Environmental Policy, environmental procedures and publically report on their environmental commitments.
