BS 8555 has been specifically designed with the small and medium sized business in mind. The British Standard BS 8555 splits the Environmental Management System (EMS) up into 6 different manageable levels or Phases - with the highest Phase 6 equivalent to ISO 14001. The business is able to choose what level it is assessed to. The 6 Phases of BS 8555 are:
A key element of BS 8555 is the development of Environmental Performance Indicators and Environmental Performance Evaluation which are used to demonstrate the company’s commitment to continual environmental improvement. The Phases are divided into a number of stages with outputs and achievements which must be achieved.
Third party BS 8555 inspection is undertaken on an annual basis and it is up to the organisation to determine what Phase of inspection they require which can be the same phase as the previous inspection or a higher phase. At each Phase all the achievement criteria must be achieved. Where achievements have not been met the assessor can record a non-conformity against the BS 8555 Standard which will need to be closed before the certification can be awarded. Observations can also be made by the assessor about the organisations achievements and where further improvements could be made.
Phase 2 of BS8555 pays particular attention to compliance with Environmental Legislation and other requirements which may apply to the operations of the business, in particular how legislation is identified and compliance checked. Management of the EMS becomes more important as progression continues through the BS 8555 phases with reference to controlled documentation.
The length and nature of the BS 8555 assessment will be dependent on the size of the business, the type of processes to be assessed, how many sites need to be visited, the nature of the legal compliance issues relating to the operation of the business, and the significance of the environmental impacts.
